About Diamond

Diamond Light Source is the UK national synchrotron facility. Diamond uses a series of three particle accelerators to accelerate electrons up to near light speeds. These are guided by magnets around the 562m storage ring. As they circulate in the ring they generate very bright light, from infrared, through visible and ultraviolet light to high energy X-rays. This light is siphoned off into experimental stations called beamlines, where scientists conduct experiments in diverse fields from fundamental physics and chemistry through structural biology and medical applications to environmental science and cultural heritage.
